Question

Ages of two people differ by 12 years. Five years ago, elder was twice younger. Find their present ages. (NCERT Linear equations – Word problem)

Answer: Let elder=x, younger=y. x−y=12. Five years ago: x−5=2(y−5). ⇒ x−5=2y−10 ⇒ x=2y−5. Substitute: (2y−5)−y=12 ⇒ y=17, x=29.
