Chapter notes

“How the Dog Found Himself a New Master!” is a folk-tale that explains in a simple way how dogs became loyal companions of human beings. The story begins in very old times when dogs were not pets. They lived in forests like other wild animals. They hunted small creatures for food, slept wherever they found shelter, and had no master or fixed home. This wild life gave them freedom, but it also brought constant danger. A dog could be attacked by stronger animals at any moment. One dog in particular grows tired of living in fear. He wants a safe, peaceful life, and he believes the only way to get protection is to serve the strongest animal in the forest.

The dog begins his search. He first meets a wolf. The wolf looks strong, sharp, and clever. The dog thinks the wolf is powerful enough to protect him. He politely offers to become the wolf’s servant, promising loyalty in return for safety. The wolf accepts. For a while, they walk together, and the dog feels relieved because he now has a master. But soon, something strange happens. The wolf suddenly becomes nervous and starts looking around suspiciously, as if he is afraid of something. The dog asks him why he looks worried. The wolf admits that he is afraid of the bear. This shocks the dog. He realizes that if the wolf fears the bear, then the bear must be stronger. So the dog decides he needs a more powerful master.

He leaves the wolf and goes to find the bear. The bear is huge, with strong claws and a terrifying roar. The dog again offers his service, and the bear agrees. Now the dog feels safer than before. But the pattern repeats. One day they meet a lion. As soon as the bear sees the lion, he starts trembling and tries to retreat. The dog is surprised again. The bear confesses that the lion is the strongest animal and that even he fears the lion. The dog thinks carefully: “If the bear is afraid of the lion, then the lion must be the strongest.” So he leaves the bear and follows the lion.

The lion accepts the dog as his servant. Life with the lion appears perfect. The lion walks proudly through the forest, roaring at every creature. All animals run away when they hear him. The dog believes he has finally found a master who is truly fearless. But one day, they meet a man walking through the forest holding a stick. The dog expects the lion to attack or at least to stand firm. Instead, the lion freezes, turns pale, and runs away. The dog is stunned. How can the strongest animal fear a man?

When the dog asks the lion about his behavior, the lion replies honestly. He says that humans are the most powerful creatures. They do not fear lions, bears, or wolves because they have intelligence, weapons, and control over nature. The dog understands this immediately. If even the lion fears humans, then humans must be the strongest beings of all. The dog follows the man, offers him loyalty, and becomes his servant. The man accepts, and the dog begins living with humans. Over time this relationship becomes permanent, and dogs live with humans forever.

The story teaches that the dog’s decision was driven by fear and the desire for security. It also shows that power is not only physical strength but also intelligence and tools. Finally, it explains why dogs are so devoted to humans: once they accepted humans as masters, they never left. The moral is that the company we choose shapes our lives, and that real strength comes from wisdom and courage, not just muscles.
